Was peekin around under the hood, and found this undone:
Does any one know what that box is for, and what those vacume lines go to? van wasn't running any codes, and doesn't run any different with or without them. they're on the 4.0 l's as well (this was found on my 3.0)
That is part of the purge system. The canister stores fumes from the gas tank and releases them to be burned in the engine. There should be a solenoid somewhere in the vacuum line that opens at a predetermined time.
My 97 aerostar had a slight gas fume odor under the hood and when I checked the same hoses, you found disconnected on your van, I found they were cracked and would lose air when plugged on one end and blown into the other. I had to replace all three of the sections coming and going. The van has idled smoother ever since.

hmmmmmmm now that you mention it, i do remember smelling gasoline comming through my vents when AC was on untill i placed those hoses back on. but i think it's time they get replaced, the ends are all cracked and stretched out. shouldn't be hard tho, hose is crazy easy to find @ auto stores
