f-150 backfires

i have a 1985 f-150 with a 300 l-6. I think the timing is off because it backfires when I let off the throttle suddenly. does anybody know what degrees it is supposed to be set at? thanks.

The books I have all say see the under hood sticker. I would think it would be somewhere between 6 and 10 at idle. What is yours running now? May be someone with your year truck can tell you.
