My dad recently bought a truck that was rebuilt by the p.o. 86 i think 6.9 idi. The truck when it first starts it burys the oil pressure guage on the right side. Even after allowing to warm it still stays 50-60 at an idle. The P.O. said in the winter it will actually blow oil filters off. He said he messed with some spring or somthing (strecthed it) to give it more oil pressure. Is there such a spring? From inspection of the actual oil pump there is no type of releif valve.
I work a an international dealer and on the T444E motor its lokated in the back of the oil filter housing. this motor is basicaly the newest 7.3. I looked a my truck which has a idi 7.3 and it seems to be in the same spot. if it is you gotta take 3 bolts out that hold the filter head to the block and 2 in front of the oil cooler remove the filter head and cooler together and dont seprate the ends from the cooler if its not leaking. the orings are a pain to change. on the inside of the filter head there should be a snapring that holds the oil presure regulator in. I would replace it rather then trying to bend the spring back.
Can any one els confirm that this is where the regulator is? I know thats where it is on the newer 7.3s
The pressure regulator is in the rear oil cooler/filter header.
On the IDI engine it is staked into position.
There are two valves in the header, one toward the oil filter lets oil pass if the filter is clogged, the other is toward the block and regulates max oil pressure.
Although it has been a while, I think there are four bolts in the rear header and three in the front header on an IDI engine.
I can't believe I don't have a picture of the oil cooler.
And as a word of warning, if you mess up the rear header it is about 350 dollars for a new one at Ford.
