I ad the same issue before. It would occasionally flicker...but only at idle. Maybe twice a week. I carried a voltmeter with me, but I couldn't get the hood popped soon enough to see alternator output voltage. It would literally flicker for a few seconds and stop.
I continued to drive the truck for another two months. Then the alternator totally failed. I would venture to guess that if your connections are good, your alternator is slowing failing.
casey, also make sure your belt routing is correct it will go on seemingly tight in different configuration happened to me r&ring w-pump in 30 below weather(i may have been in a hurry sheeeze)also some auto stores carry the cheap rebuilt alt, such as champion brand got tired of changing those out,,,boiling battries at first then surge charging,,,,shucks seems to have a good brand mines been in for 2 years without any fluctuation dont have to clean batteries near as often.
Okay, even if the connections are good. Pull the regulator off the back of the alt and look at where the brushes ride. If the shaft is worn down, it's alt time. But if not, I would throw a regulator at it. At least that's what I would check next.
In the kit I bought to repair my alt it states on top in red letters that these alts tend to burn and break certain wires. I checked and found that was what had happened to mine. Unfortunatly they tell only after you've opened the kit and can't return it.The copper wires that broke on mine were at the frt and could be seen with a flashlight without opening up the case.
I say go back to the three wire connector. Pull it, and remove the red lock, pull the pins out, clean them and squish them a little. I had the same problem. Light would flicker sometimes, but the gauge still showed charging. Take the connector apart and clean it, even if you think it's good. That's my bet.
Rubberduck is the man with the million dollar answer. I did this fix just this mourning and my light went off. Hopefully it stays off. Thanks for all the help
