Dan, I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you encountered on SHO, but it makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one these things happen to. Good luck, Jag
I'll just ping in here.
Dan- Sounds like you've been real busy. Too bad I don't live closer to you. I'd love to have helped.
I've been trying to work on '67 Camaro so that I can race it again. My partner has been sick so.... delayed.... again. Doh !!!! Maybe tonight we'll get another shot at it.
I think it's all about being creative in your thought process and loving to do stuff with your hands. That's what it takes to get to the next project imo.
$1,500 for a clutch job on a SHO eh? Remind me to never buy one of those cars. Sounds like you were very busy with yours. With as many vehicles as you have at your place (and in storage) I am really surprised you have time to get to any of them. That is cool that you have been able to find some time to work on the Ranger. I am sure it was feeling neglected just sitting there all these months. Besides, when I get my brother's down here, I will need your expertize in shoe horning a 5.0 in it.
Dutch, you're right...it's a Taurus, but it's the SHO version which is a whole different ball of wax. 220 HP out of a 4-cam, 32 valve 3.0 V6. Tons o' fun to drive, not as much fun to work on...
And Clint, $12-1500 is an average price for a clutch job on one of these when you have a shop do it.
I hope I don't have to do tranny work on my Sable(Taurus variant) for a good long time. I like the Sable a lot. It corners well with good tires. Ride nice. Get's 28mpg freeway and had some creature features for little money. I hope mine goes for another 200K miles.
All those features are inherent in the SHO as well, though the mileage runs about 26-27 MPGs. Plus, you get the sleeper factor...it's a blast blowing people's doors off with a 4-door sedan... Ride is great, though a bit firmer than the standard Taurus/Sable, excellent cornering and all the bells and whistles...leather, climate control, power everything including sunroof...
The biggest drawbacks to the SHO are the reliability (a 7000 RPM V6 has harmonics that tend to shake accessories apart) and parts prices/availabilty. Our car had a 103K on the clock when we got it and I have the complete service/repair history of it. I think the previous owner was pretty finicky and the shop he used wasn't the most honest. It's given us way less trouble it the last 25K miles than the previous owner had with it in the preceding 50K miles.
SHO's rev to 7k eh? No wonder they have a reliabilty problem, the parts are jumping off in sheer terror! I love the sleeper effect though. Still seems a pain to work on. Hopefully it will last a good long time. Which I am sure was a motivating factor in the "well, while I am here I will replace this" reasoning.
Dan, I was just visting her from the Oregon chapter, I also have a SHO, a 93. I'm with you on the sleeper effect. I was also stoped for speeding 4 times with it and no tickets, cops look at the old guy driving the 4 door and turned me loose. It's too bad that she's dead now, a deer jumped off a hill and landed in the hood, killing deer and SHO. Now she sits out back with a couple of my old trucks untill can do something with her. She still runs, just don't think I would to fix her.
I think if I were you I'd collect a parts car, rip the engine and t-axle, and build a clean installable unit that could be bookshelved until needed. From everything I know about taurus cars (NOW!) they are a major kick in the unmentionables to work on anywhere except on a benchtop.
Hmm...
Allen? Why not off the car to Dan? You're not super far away from eachother...

Now I'm wondering what the difference between you motor and mine is. I thought for some reason you had a V8 in there. It sure acts like it.
I have the DOHC 24valve Duratec V6 in my Sable. It's rated at 200HP. I'll bet your has a torque bump over mine too. Maybe I should chip mine and modify the valve body. There is no redline on my tach .... WTF ????
I was thinking the same thing.... maybe you guys could work out something. SHO's are really nice.... I should have stepped up when I bought mine. Enjoy....
Funny you all should say that...I sent him an email, I've sort of been thinking about another project using an SHO engine. (Like I really need to take on yet another project, but it's for a car I already have that desperately needs something more under the hood...)
