Working on my 1959 F-600; I got my fuel system problem licked, and now it's on to electrical. The head/tail/dome lights don't work. I'm reasonably competent at troubleshooting electrical, but I can't figure out how to get the headlight switch out to test!
How do I get this switch out?
Also, while I was under the truck fixing my fuel leak, I noticed what looks like a pressure-activated brakelight switch. Is that what it is? How do I test it?
Lastly, just in case the headlight switch itself is bad, where's the best place to get a new one?
Push the button on the switch, and pull out the ****. After that, unsrew the retaining nut, and remove the switch from the dash. The brake light switch is pressure activated from the master cylinder, don't know how to test it. I guess maybe an ohm meter and it should be out of range when not activated, and maybe screw it in to a M/C and pressurize it and check the resistance then. Just a thought on that one though. The bezel nut on the headlight switch is kinda a pain to remove unless you have a really wide screwdriver, or the tool (unless you make the tool yourself).
just to add to what wmjoe1953 mentioned, if you push in on the button at the bottom of the switch and the switch **** dosent release try spraying some WD40 in the hole, sometimes they get grimy after a lot of years.
Greg, Yep, the small push buttom is located on the body of the headlight behind the dash. Headlight shaft all the way in when you push the buttom. Then unscrew the slotted socket type nut on the front. (buy special tool, or make one )
A test light or volt meter can help you check the power from switch as the brakes are depressed. New pressure switches are fairly inexpensive to replace too.
good luck, Ed
