I am considering buying an Expedition for my wife. I have never owned a full size ford and had a few questions about things to look for before buying one.
I am looking at the 1999 - 2002 models due to price.
Are there any common problems that can be spotted/ noticed while checking one out?
How do these things hold up as far as mechanically speaking?
How do they do while towing or in 4wd?
I have seen a couple that had rust on the inside bottom of the doors, is this normal?
Anything that may raise a concern when test driving one thats not a big deal?
Any other useful information that could be used in finding the right one would be appreciated.
While I like driving my 2001 expedition, it's a nice looking SUV and tows good. I wouldn't buy one without an extremely good motor/trans extended warranty.
I can kind of understand if small parts break/go bad on a vehicle (heated seat quit working, tie rod end broke while driving, subwoofer never worked, paint bubbling on the hood, door lock actuator rivet broke off).
It's the major things like a leaking pass. side head gasket @ 80K and blowing a spark plug out of the head @113K that really bother me.
Would I buy another one....probably not. This is my 3rd Ford truck, might try an import brand next time.
My son and I both have EXPs. We have a '98 EB and a '00 XLT. They are well maintained i.e. oil change ... You can buy an extended warrentee for about 800.00 which will cover the engine, trans, and transfer case. We had to put down 200.00 and they finanse the rest at 0% for like 33.00 a month. This gives you 5 years or 100k (addtional). My XLT has 140K on her and the warrentee covers me up to essentially 240K. If you are interested in the company I used, send me a message and I'll get you the info.
Good Luck.
P.S. We both love our trucks and never plan on anything else.
I have to say, an extended warranty is good with any used vehicle purchse. In saying that, I have a '99 XLT. I love it, no major problems, no worries. I have had it for 2 years now. I purchased it with 175,000 miles on it and it still runs and runs like new. It was well maintained. Was used as an exec vehicle for a company, so it came with a record of everything that was done to it since it was created. Right down to every oil change. It has just about every option available. It tows well and runs in 4wd great. I have nothing bad to say about it. I wanted it for the size and comfort it gives. I have done a few cosmetic upgrades to it (ie, headlight, taillights, etc...), but have no upgrades on the engine as of yet. Changed out the oil to Penzoil Platinum which runs great. All in all, I think it is a good buy if it is size and comfort you are looking for.
I have a 98 Expy E.B. with the 5.4 motor. After new plugs and a couple of coil packs it runs great. Over Memorial Day weekend I took it for a 1400 mile journey and it did excellent including half of the miles were towing a 6000 lb camper. I have been using lately for a daily driver and its nice to have room when the family piles in. Overall with almost 112k miles the expy is in good condition. No real issue rusting out including the under carriage. It all depends what part of the country you are from too. Good luck! As for the test drive make sure it drives smooth (no engine miss & smooth tranny shift). Don't just take it around the block for a quick drive. Any more questions dont' hesitate to ask.
