I had my front windshield repalced with a used oem winshield from a wrecking yard. I had an outfit do the installation in the parking lot while I was at work. They used the better of the two used gaskets. The one they installed has a black snap in strip that help lock the gasket in place. The corners are chrome corner pieces. I wanted them to use the gasket with the chrome snap in strip, but the gasket was shot. My question is can I pull the black snap strip out and us the chrome snap strip ? They look very similar on the outside, but I am not sure if the under side, the part that snaps in the groove is the same ? What tools if any do I need, and any advise on an easy install of this locking strip ?
What did the company charge you to put the windshield in? My windshield is perfect, but the gasket and trim is a mess. Anyone else have cost estimate/experience having pros do the work?
No experience with the pro's doing it but I have put 3 in myself all of which did not break. I personally didn't find it that difficult and would change them all day long before I would have a shop come out and do it. In fact the one I put in my Bronco I ran out of weed whacker line so I used an old telephone cable, worked like a charm. The hardest part is getting the last corner in. You can also see that I don't use any WD40 or other type of lube on the gasket. I like to keep it dry so I don't have to worry about them leaking later from not getting a good seal.
So doing this the way you do it... do you even have to mess with the trim strip at all? Or do you just leave it in and have at it? I may be trying one of these soon and have never done a windshield before. I'm assuming that the way these windshields are shaped, as far as getting one out hopefully without destroying the rubber, I'd be working the top out and then basically lifting the windshield straight up / out? I've heard that the glass guys that do this daily can get one done in ten minutes... how hard can it be? (I may regret having said that)! Not my daily driver though so that takes some stress out of the picture...
10 minutes is hard to believe. It usually takes me about 2 1/2 hours to do one by myself. Pull the lockstrip and reinstall after putting the windshoeld back in to. I also have never bought a new gasket and have reused the old one countless times and none have leaked. I start in the driver corner and roll the gasket down and out as I apply pressure on the windshield. Patience is the key otherwise you will bust the windshield. Send me a PM if you have any more questions.
