Hello, I am new to this site but I was reading yesterday about someone putting an 86 model 302 into a 78 F-150 and had concerns about numerous things. The one that caught my attention was the issue with the flywheel and the balance concerns. I have some good news about this (I hope). I am in the process of rebuilding a 66 mustang and it had a 72 model 302 and 10 bolt toploader. I had an 82 model 302 that was laying around and decided to build it up for the 66. I knew the balancing changed in 81 so I have to use the 50oz flywheel. Well, it isn't that easy....the mustang 50 oz flywheel is 13 inches in diameter with 157 teeth and the mustang 28oz flywheel is 14 inches with 164 teeth. Long story short...use a 164 tooth 50oz flywheel from an 81-96 f-150 to match up the tranny with the newer and different balanced motor. I picked one up from local auto store for 50 bucks. I HAVE NOT INSTALLED the engine and started it up yet to see if I have vibration issues, but I am 98% sure I will not.
