Unhappy 3 Speed floor conversion problems

Wow, this site is much harder to navigate than FSB. No offense

I am trying to find a thread about my 3 speed floor conversion problems. It's a 1965 F100. We have looked underneath and can see that the rods bind against other stuff.

The gearing is VERY sloppy and hard to find any gear. The gears bind up, and I can't find 3rd at all!! I really just need a temporary solution until the guy I bought it from finds the original 3 on the tree in his "mounds" of stuff, and gives it to us.

What can I do to keep the rods from binding, and tighten up the shifting?

Sheryl

Sheryl-the quality of floor conversion shifters varies alot. The shift mechanism might be missing a piece in the pivot or it might be loose. The binding could be caused by the rods inserted from the wrong side into the shift levers. It is also possible that the shifter was not meant for a truck and the rods will not clear obstacles. Some shifters use a small bushing at the lever end(on trans) to take up the difference in hole size versus rod end size.

Welcome to our Ford Truck home!!!

The adjustment on my 65 is the "nub" that goes in the ears of the tranny will move the length of the rod by means of threads. That is to say that if you are holding the rod with the tranny end toward you and you tighten the "nub", it will move away from you and effectively shorten the linkage. I had several floor shifters in mine. They are all junk!

Thanks guys. We are waiting to get the original 3 on the tree from the guy who sold it to us. Until then, anyone know where I can get one in southern california, besides the junk yards?

You should be able to buy an aftermarket one at any auto parts store. Everything from Hurst down to Mr. Gasket. If they don't have it, it can be readily ordered, and as I recall the price wasn't too bad. None that I tried held up, I finally had one "reengineered" to hold up to my driving, although I didn't think I was that hard on it.

Sheryl,
I put in a cheapie $60.00 Mr Gasket one in my 66. Had to bend the 1st/reverse rod away from the tranny about 1 inch to clear the nut on the 2nd/3rd bolt. It works just fine. The bend is a two fold. Bend it out to clear the bolt and then bend it back to line up with the shift lever. You should wind up with a 2-3"section in the "bend" part.
Hope this helps you.

well now I have 2 different sets of rods. Both with different ends and different angles. Neither one works, so I am thinking of taking them over to my step-dads place, and have them "re-engineered" to fit. But now we are having carb problems (I think). I know that the carb that is on there, is from a 70's van with a smaller engine. Here is what is going on:

1st gear, no problems
2nd gear, totally bogs down like you are in 3rd.

We have gotten the RPM's up to about 2500 before shifting into 2nd, and it still does it. We don't know if it was an wxisting problem, cause when we got it, we couldn't even get it into 2nd from the grinding rods.

I am in the process of getting the right carb for it. We have the 2 sets of rods to get it back to 3 on the tree. oh, the second set of rods we got, was from the junk yard, from a very close year as ours. We also found the shift tube (recently replaced) out of the same truck. We found that our was toast. The shift tubes go for around $70.00 on e-bay (re-manufactured). They charged us $1.50!!! (listed on the receipt as a metal tube)

Anyone know of the correct part numbers (Holley, Carter, or whatever) for the carb?

Sure thing, no problemo, but I need to know one thing.
