HELP!!! 2001 F-550 started knocking today. Wasnt running it too hard. Had 30 ft gooseneck with 200 bales straw on it. Drove 75 miles from home, starting knocking. No loss of power, bit has excessive blowby coming from oil filler tube. Drove back home and doesnt knock untill sits and idles, longer it idles the worse the knock. Anyone have any ideas?
Sounds like bent pushrod, dropped valve, or rocker arm problem to me but don't bet the farm on it. That smoke/pressure from the oil filler tube leads me to this conclusion.
it looks like white or maybe blue colored smoke. It puffs, so it is definitely only one or two cylinders doing it. It was dark out when we started to diagnose it. The knonk is deep sounding almost sounds like a bent rod but that doesnt explain the smoke. Im not happy with it right now. mechanic friend thought cracked piston, he said he seen a cat d-6 knock like that and when they pulled it apart it was a cracked piston
Wow Dan, you jumped right on that piston thing. I find it hard to believe the piston would fail. Isn't it an aluminum slug?
It's too easy. The only way that blow by is generated in the crankcase is via the piston/piston rings. It's the ONLY path from the combustion chamber to the crankcase. A sudden increase in blow by can only mean one thing - a piston failure.
I had one that did the same thing and it was a cracked piston but it was my fault I put a little starting fluid in it. when I was young and dum but it didnt show up till about 10 miles down the road. But yes a lot of blowby and mine blew alot of oil too.
