54 panel body ?

The area where the body and floor pan meet from the rear of drivers door and wheel well.has a gap of about 1/2 inch. There is a tar like substance sealling up the gap.The same on passinger side.Is this normal ? Is there a reason or should I close the gap with steel?

It's normal. Originally they had an impregnated felt strip in there. It is to allow the floor to move without oilcanning the body is what I surmise. The pickups can twist between the cab and the bed but the panel can't. You'll find the same from the rear of the wheel well to under the taillights. I have knocked out the rear portions in doing the body work, so I plan to replace it with a strip of closed cell neoprene foam and a little butyl rope caulk. I wouldn't make it solid, something has to be able to move.

I have the same thing on my 48, you can tell exactly where it is from the outside by looking for the rust.
I'm trying to decide on what configuration I want to put together to iliminate the problem of the rust and allow some movement.
