Power Steering Cylinder

So is there a trick to getting the power steering cylinder off once you unbolt it? I have beat the hello out of it and it doesnt seem to budge. Do I need a bigger hammer? Is the steering keeping it under pressure? Am I not holding my head right? What gives? Any advice, Thanks

Uhm, I assume you are dealing with highboy power assist? I have no experience with it, but I would start by (once everything is unbolted) to turn the wheel back and forth a few times, while having a helper tap, beat or pull in appropriate ways to get what you want to come off. (of course, no getting fingers in the way.)

Thanks, it is a highboy...and has had me cussing quite a bit. Have the truck up on ramps right now, so I will go crank on the wheel....no wait, I will get my better half to crank on the wheel while I continue the beating, pulling, pleading and see what happens.

Take it off of the ramps, and put it on jack stands. Might make your job easier, and turning the wheel on ramps might make them shift.

Are you replacing it?
Simply remove the stud side (side that attaches to the tie rod end) by removing the end, jist like a shock absorber, leave the adapter that fits into the tie rod alone.
Then whack the bracket on the other end. This has a tappered end. If you have a "pickle fork", you can use this, but if not, then just whack the bracket that attaches to the axle. Do not hit the ram, it will never come off this way.
Just like TRE's, you hit the knuckle and not the TRE.

Instead of a pickle fork try a pitman arm or tie rod end puller. They are inexpensive and the tool will last forever. Just don't ever loan it to anyone.

LOL, true that with ANY tool. I had a guy once tell me that tools are an investment. I said that to somebody else, he said your investment is going to be somebody else's tools, so be careful with them.

Thanks 75F350 I got the cylinder off with no trouble once I took the top off. Also I had to take the bracket of the axle, but no biggie. It is leaking fluid like a faucet! None of the auto places I went to today had a replacement. I was told that even the manufacturer is out of stock. This is not good news for me..is there a reliable online resource where I could procure a cylinder? Also I am going to need to replace the rubber bushing. Do you think I should go to Ford to look for these parts? I dont really want to put a used one on, but I might have to till I can find a new one.

Good luck at the Ford dealer. Everytime I ask the dealer for parts, they tell me that part was discontinued in '96. Maybe a good parts guy could cross reference something that would fit. Or get on the internet. That cylinder might be very hard to find. I had a problem with an old highboy and I just ditched all the power steering components altogether. I then had arm strong steering but everything was tight. It really wasn't that bad unless the truck was not moving.

Glad you got it removed.
Sometimes they can be a little stubborn. Pullers are difficult to get in there. A good old BFH works best for me. I am a firm believer i"the right tool for the right job", however, there is a time when the BFH is the right toll.
Check out this thread, it pertains to this topic, and Mil1on has posted some decent stuff. There are also several other links to read that also pertain to this exact topic.
Most importantly, you need to know which style system it is. There were two different units.
Good luck with the rest.

I know of about four different outfits that rebuild them. They are on the internet if you look them up.

Lares Corp.

Autokrafters

Straight Line Steering (kinda expensive)

Power Steering Pros.

All of these are around $250 for a rebuild. (straight line quoted me a little more) Surely there are some others.

They all told me the same thing. They cut the cylinder open, replace seals, put new ram in if needed. Ball stud end can not be replaced. If ball stud is bad, cylinder is basically junk.

Hope that helps.
