hey guys maybe you can help me out here . i went and took the rear bumper and brackets off of a totally shot 55 today that i bought for 10 bucks .well any way it had a hood ornament on it that looked like a "blunt " nosed early jet fighter on the hood . it has a part number on it 570460rh. it is contoured to fit the hood of our beloved effies . is this thing something worth picking up { to late i gave 'em two bucks for it just in case !} or just an aftermarket geegaw ?
The optional factory hood ornament was a "bird". Do a search here on hood ornament or bird ornament, it has been discussed and pictured a number of times, part # too. Good ones brought high prices on ebay in the 300 -500.00 range. Someone here is now reproducing them in stainless. I don't know if FofC had a different ornament for the M100s.
I seen one on a truck on ebay, a short while ago, but I can't find the pic. I cleaned up my computer today, since I couldn't do anything outside or in the garage. I probably deleted the link. It could've been a bird, but I thought the pic I arrowed was it.
i know about the bird ax , but this one was on a 55 that had no identifying merks on the hood and ive been liberating parts from it and the one next to it as they are totally rusted out peices of crap with no titles . it caught my eye as i could swear id seen it somewhere before so i got it and hoped maybe someone could point me in the right direction . havi it looks simialar to the one in your pic only the " pods " on the wings are shorter . well gotta go i'm gonna go liberate the spare tire holder and hardware from under the other one 'fore i got to go to work . thanx for the info havi and as i asked 'fore in your opinion is this truck or car ? either way got a cool tidbit to hang 'round with the other useless stuff here !
Check out this eBay listing, item # 130160017684. This bird was for the '53 thru '56, 100 thru 900 series trucks only. I have no clue if it was offered for the Mercury. If anyone knows if it was please let me know.
As far as Canadian trucks go this bird is elusive in the parts book. Looked in my 53 book, nope. Looked in the 54 suppliment, yes. Bird listed 54 only, gasket listed 54 and in hood section 53-54. Hardware is listed as 54. It's also not listed in my 55 book. I don't have a 56 parts book.
I suspect the jet was an aftermarket or "donor" item that gain popularity as a fad, much like the Mack Bulldog or Nash Flying Lady (or cow horns in TX) was a popular custom fad addition in the 50s.
