Question Econoline amplifier bypass????

I recently purchased a 1991 E150 full conversion, 81000 orig. miles excellent condition in and out for $3200. anyway, i went to change out the factory radio and install my pioneer cd player, hooked everything up correctly (triple checked it) and i got power to the radio but no audio out of the speakers. This left me puzzled as i was just listening to the other radio coming down the road. Now a friend said he heard when they install a factory amp in the dash that it needs to be bypassed in order for the aftermarket player to work. Is this true??? and if so how do i go about doing this. Not much of a radio guy but after a couple weeks with out a radio im getting tired of having to sing to myself goin down the road!!! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pat McCafferty
