95 f- 150 300 i6 trying to figure out what my problem is. I have replaced my coolant 50/50 mix. replaced my thermostat w/ 180*. I cannot see any coolant loss. both my top and bottom hoses are hot and so is the radiator. the top hose is hard, but not rock hard i can still squeeze it. I can ride in the city for an hour and all of a sudden the temp guage will start to creep up when i am in line at wendy's or a patriots game traffic, but it bounces around and then after it hits the "m" it will stay there and slowly creep up to the " L ". as soon as i drive it will slowly go back down. my fan clutch seems to be working ( when it creeped up i turned the truck off and gave it a little spin there is some resistance although not too much it will only make it a half revolution). also put a piece of paper on the radiator when stopped and it stuck to the radiator. trying to figure out what is up. the only thing that i see that is weird is that there are tiny goldish looking flakes floating in my coolant. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
That thermostat is too cold, it will make your truck run rich. Next time you get your truck up to normal temp.shut it off a reach inside the shroud a feel for areas that are cooler (could be plugged). If it's same all over and there are no small leaks then it is probably your water pump.
also i have been looking at fan shrouds, my truck i think only has one at the top (upper fan shroud?) and it does not look anything like the ones i see everywhere else.
thermostat should be 195 not 180 and you may have an air pocket if your hoses get real tight also check your radiator cap make sure its good and its the right pressure. make sure your air filter isnt stopped up making the engine have to work to get air
i know it should be 195 but the truck was getting hot, so so i put a 180* in. i bought new cap and still nothing. i should go have the radiator looked at. although the water pump doesn't seem as expensive.

I think you should have the radiator looked at, too...
and I also think you need to check your ignition timing.
believe it or not, if the timing is excessively advanced OR retarded, it can make the engine run hot... I doubt this is the case, but it's worth checking as a "hey, I'm under the hood, might as well."
I really think your radiator is either partially plugged, or, has some rotted out fins
I also had this same problem. I tried changing thermostats (to a 165 degree) (I know, I know.....shouldn't change the stat to a lower one) Problem NOT solved. After 200,000 miles with no radiator flush, and checking on the cost of rodding the old radiator, I decided to put a new radiator in. I opted for a new 2 row instead of the OEM 1 row, because I pull trailers a lot. I also put on a new fan clutch (figured I may as well, considering the mileage) problem solved. PS, I also put a 195 degree stat back in.
You could try flushing the radiator yourself. They sell stuff for that. A good way to check the clutch on the fan is after it's up to temp. Take a rolled up news paper or magazine and slowly stick it in the blades. If it's bad it will stop it easy. If it's good you won't be able to stop it.
