I just bought a 54 f100 pick up and got a 352 engine and c6 trans on the bed.
The engine has poor compression (40 low to 90 high)and I want to get the heads off to check the valves - I unbolted the intake manifold, but it looks like I have to dismantle the cam and remove the pushrods before I can pull the intake off ?
The numbers on the engine ( comes with a 2v carb) only say 29 and then 352 underneath - somewhere else on the block I can find a small 66 stamp - anyone know which engine this is and how to interprete the numbers ?
Can't help you much. The "352" stamp just indicates that your motor is of the FE engine family. It could well be anything from 352 cid to 410. If you were told it was a 352, it probably is. These engines are famous, however, for not being identifiable from block stampings and casting numbers. To be sure of what you have you'll have to pull the heads and measure both the bore and stroke. A 4.00" bore and 3.5" stroke equals a 352.
I recently changed my intake to a 4bbl. once you unbolt the intake and remove all of the accesories from it,just pull the pushrods out and remove the intake. I have been told that if you remove the pushrods for this reason, and plan to reuse them, be sure to put them back in the same place that they come from.
I feel for you as I'm trying to get mine back together. When I pulled my intake to replace a blown gasket, I did have to remove the rocker rail and push rods to get the intake off and be able to re-install it. I still have the rails and pushrods out until I can figure out the proper torqe pattern and specs. As for the pushrods, I noticed that mine were the solid type and several were heavily pitted. I went ahead and spent the $4 per rod and got all new ones. Don't know if it will do any good, but don't think it could hurt. Good luck!!
