1996 f-150 98,ooo miles 302. Somtimes when i start up the truck it will make a different noise than just the engine running. It is hard to explain the noise but it sounds similar to a high speed fan or like a "whoooosh" noise as i rev the motor. It goes away within a few seconds if i bring the rpms up to 1500. Any help would be great. thanks
Certainly sounds like a fading fan clutch to me, too. The viscous fluid isn't so viscous any more. Possibly the bearing in the clutch, which is a non-replaceable item. Fan clutch can be had for about $20-$30. Will probably help your mileage too.
Engine off, keys in your pocket, reach over the shroud and give the fan a spin. If it's hard to move, like can't be done with one finger, it's too tight. Replace it. If you can move it, give it a quick flick. If it turns more than half a turn, it's too loose. Replace it.
I had one lock up on my 86 Bird. Heard it start roaring some before I pulled over for a pit stop. Engine cooled a bit before I got back in, and when I cranked back up and got back on the interstate, it sounded more like a 747 than a lil' ol' T-Bird with a 3.8L V6. I think the fan was pulling the car more than the tranny was pushing it. Fuel mileage SUCKED!! I went from 26 highway to 9 highway because of that fan, LOL.
My neighbor had the same problem with his 97 f150. It sounded like a prop plane when you started it up and you could hear it going down the road from inside my house.
