390 rebuild

Congrats, you're well on your way. If you stick with the 390 crank, your best bet for pistons would be the TRW L2291F30. I think a number of guys here have used them. They are forged, and run about $250 for a set. Assuming a .041" compressed Fel-Pro performance head gasket, you're looking at a static compression ratio of 9.6:1 with the 72 cc chambers on the Edelbrock heads. Your pistons would be .016" down the hole, which is close enough to zero deck, and you shouldn't have any valve clearance problems. You can also use your existing crank and rods. I plugged those specs into Desktop Dyno, including your cam , heads and carb specs, and came up with projections of 281 hp @ 5000 rpm, and 322 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm. The best thing to do to get more is to dump your manifolds for headers. Small tube headers alone increased output to 347 hp @ 5500 and 383 lb-ft @ 4000 (23% and 19% gains, respectively).

I happen to be building a 410 stroker right now. I'm also boring .030 over (yields 416 cid) and using a 428 crank and rods. I went with Sterling 390 forged truck pistons, which are shorter than the TRW's and have a .097" dish, to keep the CR down. They're also cheaper - I paid a little over $100 for the set. I'm using smaller volume heads that you, so my CR is 9.6:1. Using the same pistons and a 428 crank with your block and heads yields a CR of 9.3:1. The hp and torque gains over the 390 are minimal, though. Using the stock manifolds yields 278 hp @ 5000 and 331 lb-ft @ 3500, and small tube headers yield 342 hp @ 5000 and 393 lb-ft @ 4000.

The 410 would cost a little more to build than the 390 because you have to buy the crank (but you'd get part of the cost back through cheaper pistons). It doesn't make as much peak HP as the 390, but it makes more torque. The 390 will rev quicker and higher, but the 410 has a big advantage in power and torque at 3500 rpm and below. The 410 also has a slightly lower CR, which should make it a little friendlier to pump gas. Keep in mind that you could use taller or non-dished pistons in the 410 to increase the CR and gain some power, but at the risk of having to use 94+ octane all the time.

Frankly, I think your carb is too big (others will disagree, though) and the cam is awful. There are much better cams out there from Crower, Comp Cams and others that will give you much better performance.

I saw that you bought the HS rockers and shafts. What about stands and end supports? You're going to need them. Either get them from Dove, or return them and buy a full roller set up from Rocker Arm Specialists. They come complete and they will shim them for edelbrock heads. One advantage is that they are roller bearings instead of bushings.

Just a few examples on my cam choice comment. I plugged into Desktop Dyno the same figures I used above to calculate HP and torque on your 410 buildup with the Edelbrock cam, but substituted the specs for some FE cams from Competition Cams, the 265DEH and the 275DEH, both of which are dual pattern cams for high performance street use. If low end performance is most important to you, the 265DEH at 4 degrees advanced is awesome. Peak HP was 335 @ 4500, but the torque curve looked like a table -- perfectly flat at 448 lb-ft from 2500-3000 rpm, and staying well over 400 from below 2000 to almost 4000 rpm.

If you prefer to bias toward the top end, the 275DEH installed straight up gave 350 HP @ 5000, which is more ponies than the Ebock, and had gobs more torque than the Ebock (peak of 421 @ 3500).

The moral of the story -- regardless of whether to build a 390 or a 410, you need to get a better cam and some headers. If money is tight, I'd go with the headers over the 428 crank and just build a wicked 390.

Not to disagree because I'm not running the edelbrock cam but will run a similar comp solid, but B.S.Campbell has the RPM cam running 12.75's in his F250 so it cant be too bad to push a truck to those times.

The posted number from Edelbrock are close but most that I've heard from say they are a tad bit high. I've heard about the flow of the 6006 heads being close but not quite what they claim.

the head choice is great, have a valve job done as the quality can vary from Edelbrock.

I haven't tried the Ed carbs, but I've heard Holley vac sec is best.

going to a 410/428 crank can be costly. I bought a 390 kit, then found a 428 crank and ended up paying about $1200 more to get a 428. BUT I got a new billit steel 428 flywheel, 428 crank, custom cut L2291F pistons 12" CF DF clutch and balancing for all that.

The choice of cams is debateable, I don't like the fact that Ed only offers 2 FE cams and Crower has more that a dozen of them. It just seems that a selection of 2 cams can't cover a very wide build model.

I don't know if end stands are needed, but if your running into the 5500+ rpm range, I'd spend the extra dough for them.

Go with the FPA headers. Hooker Competition headers will NOT fit the exhaust ports on the Edelbrock heads. I don't think their Super Comp headers will fit either. I've heard that FPA will make a set that will fit. I need to replace my headers because of this.

I don't know what type of heads you were running previous to the edels but my flowtech headers that I had on my D2TE-AA heads mount up perfectly to my 6006 edels.
