i am fixing to "upgrade" my abused '73 390 to a 4V system, but the manifold i am wanting to use is off a block that is either a 390 or a 360, and my dad says the only way to really know what the manifold is by the numbers on the rear of the engine block, buried in an old car... no easy task... but i was thinkin the heads and intake manifold on the 390 and 360 are the same interchangable pieces, anrn't they? hopefully some one knows the answer, thanx to all...
The intakes are the same and will interchange, basically everything is the same except the crank, pistons and rods. The main difference is the stroke of the crank and the rods, sometimes the 390 pistons are used in a 360 to lower CR.
The intake isn't different? I don't know about the 360 vs 390, but I have had many discussions about the 302 and 351W. On those engines it is different. Has to be wider on the 351 cause the deck is higher by about an inch I think it was. Alot of parts are interchangable on the 302/351W, but not the intake. I would find out for sure first.
Cool BBB, like I said, I wasn't sure of that. I don't have any experience with FE engines. Are all the blocks the same size with different bore x stroke? Or does it just work out that the deck height is the same? By the way, what does the FE stand for? I'm clueless. Thanks.

FE= Ford Edsel
360 = 4.05 bore X 3.50 stroke
390 = 4.05 bore X 3.78 stroke
I don't remember the 352 and 428 right off. but basically the difference is in the crank, rods,pistons. I have heard rumors about a couple of them having different heads. but I don't know about that.
For example my 390 has 427 rods 390 pistons and crank and 406 heads.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Nov-01 AT 01:04 PM (EST)]Ryan, all the FE blocks have the same external dimensions. Motor mount bosses changed from two to four in ’65. The big difference is internally, different bores and strokes for the various displacements. Oil systems were upgraded or redesigned on the high performance engines.
What’s FE stand for, that’s a good question that’s gone around and around for a long time. My vote is for Ford/Edsel.
FE is either "Ford/Edsel" or "Ford Engine", depending on who you ask. All FE blocks, as someone already pointed out, have the same external dimensions, including a 10.17" deck height. The various displacements I am familiar with (bore x stroke) are:
352 (4.00" x 3.50")
360 (4.05" x 3.50")
390 (4.05" x 3.78")
406 (4.13" x 3.78")
410 (4.05" x 3.98")
428 (4.13" x 3.98")
Then there is the 427. While it is also in the FE family, it is really a very different engine designed expressly for racing. 427 blocks are different castings with much larger bores (4.23"?) and the 390/406 stroke. They're also mucho expensivo. Most of us non-rich types are running a 390 or 428, and a few of us are running or building a 410. The 406 can be a great hi-revver (it was the forerunner to the 427), but you don't see it much (at least not an original 406 - you can bore out some 390's to match the 406's dimensions). Is anyone on this board running a 406?
