CODES?VIN/Fuel cell
Hey all I'm new on here so just wanted to say hello and maybe get some help.
I bought a 77 f250 high boy and am trying to determin how original eevery thing is I ran the vin number and all that said was it was a 77 F250 4x4 with a 351 assembled in Canada. But I want more information then that!!!!!!!
Vin F26HCX81911
Body code EB4
Trans code A
Axle code B4J
WB133 obvious wheel base is a hundred thirty three inches
So if you can figure this out or give me a link that doesn't give me the same crap I got from searching on here. Like years from 1990 and up that is crap. Also did other searching and was looking for fuel cell to get rid of the behind seat tank and found an article on here that helped. It was areo tanks and they offer two good options a 32 gallon rear tank between the frame or two 18 gallon tanks between the frame and bed sides. I chose the two tank set up so I didn't have to move the exhaust or modify my hitch set up. And the cost was a bit high at 830 that included the two tanks sending unit selector valve filler necks mounting hardware

Here you go. http://www.medicine.wisc.edu/~mrm/bronco/ftvin.cgi This is an old vin decoder that sometimes has some errors but it works pretty good. By far the easiest to use. One thing though...J is your front axle code and B4 is your rear axle code.
Here is what it told me:
Results for VIN#: F26HCX81911
Model Year: 77
Series: F250 - 4x4 Pickup
Engine: 8 Cyl, 351ci (5.8L) 2bbl
Assembly Plant: Ontario Truck
Transmission: 4 spd, Manual, New Process 435
Front Axle: P.S.
Rear Axle: 4.10 Limited Slip, 5200lb Dana 60
One thing Id like to mention without bursting your bubble too bad is that having the 351m engine means this truck is a later 77 and thus is NOT a highboy. No big deal and I personally like the drive train configurations much better in the 77.5-79 trucks versus the 73-77 highboys. Just a matter of opinion
The fuel cell you mentioned seems IMHO really expensive but anything is better than using 15 gallons of gas as a back rest. The filler neck and sending unit being included is deffinately a plus though. What about mounting brackets? Hind sight being 20/20 you couldve bought a new replacement gas tank to mount between the frame rails with the sending unit upper and lower straps and new fuel lines for less than half of that.
Good luck with your truck. What are your future plans?

Well there not sure exactly when the truck was built but it has the tank behind the seat and narrow frame rails which implies a highboy but doesn't have the divorced transfer case. Also has the 2 1/2 inch wide rear springs not 3 inch which implies highboy. Plans are to tear it apart and put her back together with new rubber all around and under coat rhino lining and fresh paint CD bucket seats an winch bumpers. And as to the mounting straps of the fuel cells it does't use a strap set up. Its flangs bolts to the inside of the bed so as long as you don't mind seeing the bolt heads it's all good. An oh yes I'm searching for a 460 possibly. But it will be a bit before I complete since it is a weekend project. I figure a year or two will be complete.

Army,
The gas tank behind the seat was standard in trucks from 73-77. Im thinking it was something like an option to have a under bed mounted tank. The fact alone that it does not have a divorced transfer case and it does have a 351M makes it NOT a highboy. That is what Ive always thought of as the dead give away.
I pulled this from the sticky at the top of the 73-79 forum
The basic definition seems to be:
=========================
A Hiboy is a Ford truck that came from the factory as having the following:
- Built from 1967 thru 1977.5.
- F-250.
- 4x4.
- Divorced transfer case.
Trucks that are NOT considered a Hiboy are:
- Any truck built after mid-1977. It goes by Consecutive Build Number in the VIN# anything built starting Y80001 is a 77 1/2. **
- Anything other than an F-250.
There will always be a couple very oddball exceptions but, for the most part, this is it.
Front axle choices in the Hiboy were either the 8 lug Dana 44 or the old style low-slung pinion Dana 60 (commonly referred to as the Dana 50). Engine choices were either the 6 cylinder or 360 2 bbl. Steering was either manual or power ram assist.
-Basic definition provided by user: BigBuddy
That should also confirm that highboys were made up to 77.5. Its not unlikely that being a truck on the see saw of the 77-77.5 model year that some components could have been frankensteined together...such as the 2.5" rear springs.

Like I said not exactly sure but to my knowledge only the Highboy had the narrow springs and narrow rear frame rails in the rear which could of just been left over and got the lowboy or standard drive components slapped down in it. I also used to think that the Highboy came standard with the divorce transfer case.

Well thanks guys for all the help I might just like this site and you are all ok! And I looked at a few other things and the front spring mount that is like a cross member is only on the Highboy and the rear cab mounts. And to some ones mention to fuel cells being cheaper to get one that mounts between the frame Aerotank was the only place I found a tank that would fit and as I mentioned didn't want to reroute the exhaust and hitch. Ok thanks guys love all the talk.
