hey guys, im new to this forum so any help would be greatly apprciated, i just bought a 2003 f250 lariet cc sb, i used my 4x4 on the beach the other day and ever since the front end had been clunking when you max out the steering on eaither side. it sounds like it could be coming from the u joints as if their binding up or some where near there. if you guys have any suggestions please help me out.
I had that happen once, it turned out to be the spider gears in the front diff. Sand is hard on the spiders because you get no traction then it grabs all of a sudden on one side or the other. Mine was in a Dana 44. I woould check u-joints first. If you can DIY it won't cost too much. Or upgrade to a locker of some sort.
Jack up the front of your truck and turn the tires individually. You will be able to look at the U-Joint/Axle when you do. If the axle moves when you turn the tire, the hub is not disengaged. If both tires spin without the axle/U-Joints moving then I am not sure what the problem is. Most likely the hubs are not disengaging like redford said. Just a quick easy way to check.
