intermittent grinding when braking

In the past several weeks, I have been getting a grinding noise when braking. It sounds like I have worn through the pad but it does not happen all the time. Sometimes when braking, I hear it, let up, then re-apply pressure to the brakes, and it does not do it.

Anybody have any ideas?

Yup it sounds like the pads are worn out. Remove the left front wheel and look at the rotor and pad. Deep rough groves in the rotor indicate that the pads are worn out.
