Smoking 360

I just acquired a 73 F250 4x4 in great stock condition. (the air conditioning still works!) One small problem, it smokes and eats oil like Oprah at the all-you-can-eat buffet.

Question. How can I determine the cause of the oil issue? Will a compression test differentiate between bad rings and valve leakage? If at all possible I would like to avoid a bottom half rebuild right now and having the heads rebuilt will cost significantly less than a lower end.

i would do the compression check and then a `leak` down test..
that will lead you in the right direction...

Now ... when i got my truck from my dad it burned/used 1 qt of oil for every tank of gass
Turned out to be that the intake manifold bolts were loose and the ole 390 was sucking oil in through the intake manifold gaskets!! and the blow by was the exhaust crossover leaking in to the crankcase!

I did pull the heads and do the valve job BUT ... grab a wrench and give a tug on the intake manifold bolts and see if things improve...
Has it had Hardened valve seats installed? might be time anyway!
