Still havin problems getting stater to mesh with flywheel, workin on a 1979 F250 4x4 400, installed 1977 460. Used 390 flywheel 351m clutch pressure plate tob, used inner pilot bearing hole. But still 351m starter won`t mesh with flywheel. Just barely will touch, but won`t crank. ......Help. p.s. t-18 tranny.
Is it the depth that is the issue, or its reaching far enough, but not engaging the teeth because it is too far away? I checked autozone's interchange computer, it looks like the 351M starter will work on a 460.
i am thinking that you will need a 385 series (i.e. 370, 429, 460) flywheel. dont know that the 390 flywheel will even work IF your engine cranked over. also not sure about the starter, but i think it may work even tho its from a 335 series engine (i.e. 351C/M, 400M)...if you have the right flywheel. there again, i am not sure. i know a few people that have had trouble with 460's and starters. but your best bet would be to get a 460 flywheel, then go from there. BTW make sure you get a pre-78 flywheel for your powerplant.
thanks for the reply, i had dealt with a man from northern ky. contact through greens ford. he raced big block fords. all 460 in 73-79 4x4. he said he always built his with 78 or older 460 and used 390 fly wheel then drilled out to fit a 351m-400 pressure plate. then your able to use stock 351m starter.with stock 351m-400 4speed bellhousing.but since i`ve moved lost his number.wonder if theres 2 different flywheel or starter teeth patterns?
the starter teeth patterns are the same, but the tooth count on the flywheels can be different.
157, 160, (interchanges) and 164.
I am still searching for FE flywheel sizes, but in the mean time, take a paint marker, mark a tooth, and start counting teeth. Without a factory part number, nobody can tell you what have without having to count the teeth for you.
[edit]
I am looking at aftermarket starters, they make no mention of flywheel tooth counts, the only thing I noticed is that the nose extends 2 3/8", and there is a model that extends only 2". That starter is listed only for a Lima belhousing, not the big block.
[edit x2]
I cant find my interchange books to tell you if there is a different diameter of flywheels
