Well, you could try some gunk or carb. cleaner and a wire brush. Or next time you go to the do-it-yourself car wash, bring them with you and use the degreaser and high-pressure spray on them. They might not like you when you leave though. Are you running a thermostat and a pcv?

Oh just wondering why your taking them off for cleaning. No thermostat or pcv will cause a lot of sludge buildup.

Chris, what kind of oil have you been running in this engine ? The wrong oil will give you sludgey stuff under the valve covers, but it will be every where else as well. Maybe the whole engine needs to be cleaned ? DF

Liters, grams, what are those? Seriously, where do you get sodium hydroxide, Drano?

When you get it all cleaned off, don't use 10W-40 oil. See the "Oil and Lubrication" forum for a discussion on 10W-40 oil.

CJR900, what I was wondering is what brand of oil are you useing ? I don't think the weight really matters much. There are some brands of engine oil , however, that have a lot of wax in them. You should avoid them if at all possible. DF

Blow-by is the problem, rebuild is the answer. In the meantime run straight 40W.
