Well, you could try some gunk or carb. cleaner and a wire brush. Or next time you go to the do-it-yourself car wash, bring them with you and use the degreaser and high-pressure spray on them. They might not like you when you leave though. Are you running a thermostat and a pcv?
Chris, what kind of oil have you been running in this engine ? The wrong oil will give you sludgey stuff under the valve covers, but it will be every where else as well. Maybe the whole engine needs to be cleaned ? DF
CJR900, what I was wondering is what brand of oil are you useing ? I don't think the weight really matters much. There are some brands of engine oil , however, that have a lot of wax in them. You should avoid them if at all possible. DF
im running some cheap kinda from the dollar store right now.. like 75cents per quart. i usually dont put that in.. but it burns it so fast i really didnt think it would matter
