That would work, but if I remember right the assemblies that have the 3rd brake light built in are wider than the ones without the brake light. I might be wrong though. I'll measure them when I get a chance.
If I am reading this correctly a 3rd brake light from a 94-96 F-series will fit where the standard cargo light is? Getting tired of the near misses byt the rice wangans around there that can't see worth a flip.....
If it's clear (and pre-'94), it's not a brake light, it's only a cargo light. It's turned on by rotating your headlight switch dimmer CCW until it clicks, turning on the cargo light and the interior lights as well.
Nope. Even my 93 doesn't have a third brake light. Because my WHITE F350 crewcab has been rear-ended SIX times by idiots, I decided to add this feature.
The LED's I used produce 8000 mcd which is more than bright enough for this application, especially with sixteen of them.
Frederic.... you do some of the coolest projects.. I wish I had the time. The digital dash thing looks great BTW.....
Another friend of mine put an LED taillight on his snowmobile a few years ago. It was a Polaris XLT with the big wrap around taillight assembly, but only the outer edges has bulbs. So he gets this idea to mount high intensity LEDs in the center part in the shape of the word "Polaris". He used something like 70-80 LEDs for this, and it was rediculously bright... at night you could see a red glow in the forest hundreds of yards away as he would brake for a turn... even if you were not in direct line of sight. It was silly and cool all at the same time. The funny part was he still got rear ended by one of his buds at a road crossing one day, and the only thing damaged was the LED panel.
I would use a nibbling tool (about $15 for a low quality, import unit, good for one or two projects like this) because you can notch out square holes perfectly if you need to, and enlarge the hole one snip at a time. Dremels, because of the speed they produce, can often "walk" and you're probably going to need to brace yourself with one hand while standing in your bed leaning on the back of your cab. While a little walking may not be the end of the world, if your hands slip you could very easily dremel your way across the painted surface of the cab and add work to your project.
Just a thought...

Thank you!
But don't jinx me. Since the LED's were installed, I've not been rear-ended. Maybe that's pure coincidence but thinking it helped gives me a little peace of mind.
Sadly, every rear-ender was a teen or early 20's in a smallish car, yapping endlessly on the cell phone. As much as the "headset only" law that exists here annoys me to no end I can personally appreciate the reason it exists. Six times the appreciation of most people I guess.
I am glad my crewcab has a nice rake typical of the 2wd F-series of this vintage... they always go under rather than into the bumper/bed/tailgate. Means some paint on the bumper and new bumper mount brackets and I'm good to go rather than getting an unplanned, major project.
Hey I can relate. I have a white F150 super cab long bed and have been pulled out in front of (and I run with lights on) or forced off road more times than I can say. I thought it was grey that no one could see.
The 3rd light was in 94 . The clear light are cargo only

yea same deal here, because people see big trucks and assume they are slower, what they dont undertand is that even at slower speeds, all that mass creates alot more momentum than their little hondus do at higher speeds. # 1 complaint when driving the dumptrucks is people who shorten my stopping distance
i have been considering installing a third brake light on my 88 also. but i was thinking about mounting it on the rear differential cover so the ricers could see it.
