Re-wiring a light.

We bought a cap about a year ago and when they installed it, they wired the light inside the cap to the marker lights. The light inside the cap has it's own switch, but I have to turn the marker lights on in order to supply power.

I would really like to wire the light directly to the battery or piggy-back a circuit that's directly connected to the battery.

Any advice on how do do so is greatly appreciated.

TIA.

you could probably tie into some existing wire, but i dont remember anything redily available. i think the best way might be to get a 16 guage roll of wire from Auto Zone and a shirt 15 amp fues. start at the battery + junction box terminal and run the new wire with a fuse under the cab with plastic ties wires and up to the cap. you could use it for the light and also put a 12 volt plug (cigarette lighter) to run a seperate radio, TV, or other light. that would keep you seperate from the truck wiring and cause no additional problmes.

Thanks for the replies.

I really like that idea. Especially making use of the new line by adding a 12V jack/plug. Could be very useful.

I need to take a closer look at where and/or how they tied the power in initially. I can probably get to it in a week or two. I guess there's so many options that it'll be interesting to see exactly what they did.

As xjoedirt55x pointed out, any ideas on the fuse?

BTW, Great forum!

a 12 guage wire is good for about 20 amps... a 14-16 gauge will take about 15 amps. with a couple lights and a TV or radio you might need 10 amps. im guessing 16 gauge wire witha 15 amp fuse would be plenty... if your buying a boom box, put in a bigger wire!--------- dont go straight to the battery if you dont have to. most trucks have the positive battery cable go to a terminal block on the fire wall then distribute from there. that would be a good place to bolt on another wire end.
