Proper starting procedure?

'91 F350 dually, '94 reman engine. What's the correct starting sequence? Do you depress pedal on cold engine to set fast idle. I have replaced the controller, one dead plug, and lift pump, but still seem to have a starting problem when cold. If I don't touch the pedal, it will start, run for a second or two and die. Then, its crank for several minutes before it will start. Took the return line loose and it seems to be O.K.

On the sun visor on my '85 it says to depress acc. 1/2 way if above 32* and fully if below 32* (after WTS light goes out)

And not to crank for more than 20 secd. at a time.

Sounds like air intrusion letting fuel run back to the tank when engine not running.

This sounds like the common problem these older diesels are having. It is the old return fuel lines located between the injectors. If they are painted gray they are original and are getting brittle which is letting air into the fuel system letting the fuel return towards the fuel tank leaving air in it's place.
Don't crank the engine over 20 seconds with a 3 minute cool down or the starter will give out from the heat.

Yep, it's the air in the line thing...same thing happened to my 86' 6.9. Put a new line on by the fuel filter to the injection pump...Runs like a champ.

O.k., my checklist for things to do tomorrow! It's annoying to sit there and crank that thing over and over-embarrassing too!
