my daily driver is a 1955 F-100 i use this baby for everything, she originally came with a granny gear 4-speed and a 4.88 rear. i swapped them out cause they were horrible on the highway, i swapped in a 1966 F-100 9in rear with 3.00 gears and replaced the 4-speed with an original 3-on the tree. it runs great on the road now but it feels like it could use an extra gear. I've been doing some reading and thought an overdrive would be a good route to go, but the thing is i can't find an original overdrive anywhere, i check Ebay all the time but nothing good ever turns up. I also have a couple of T-10 transmission laying around that fit the bell housing pattern perfect, it would be nice to stick that 4-speed in their but it would cost too much money to get the parts. usually all the modifications that i do fit like stock stuff with no alterations of any kind, so i can convert the truck back to stock if i wanted. any suggestions? should i change the rear gearing? Transmission? or should i leave it the way it is? i'll take any suggestions, thanks!
Quick notes: -its running the original 16 inch rims with 7.50 tires -the rear isnt a posi, or limited slipp, its 3.00 open gearing -has a 223 six in it -if your interested in all the stock style modifications to my truck just ask me!
An original OD would be ideal. You don't want to go below 3.00 with a standard transmission because taking off in first gear could become a problem. If you want to keep your truck reasonably original I'd keep looking for the original OD or leave it as is...
Was the four speed a T-98? A lot of trucks used them. Look up eBay item No's 270154739621 and, 170139337848. These listings show other truck makes that used the T-98 transmission. I was told that Jeep used a T-98 and offered, what they called, a Saturn overdrive that bolted to the tail of the transmission. Maybe one of the others offered an overdrive as well. Also, if you have money to burn contact Gear Vendors. They make shift on the fly OD units that bolt to the tail piece.
Gear Vendors are great if you got the $$$ they are very pricey, but VERY NICE!!!!! My wife's uncle has one and don't even know how to use it!!! I wish I had it!!
