Volare power steering

Hi Guys

I have a 56 F100 with a Volare suspension and do not like the steering.

The steering wheel turns too easy and this causes the truck to wander. It has the original power steering box and a Chevy pump. I am wondeing if this mismatch is causing the problem. Any Ideas?

Is the pulley on the pump you're using the same size as the original Chrysler pulley ? I think changing pulley sizes would make the steering feel different. I'm using the same set-up on my 56 , but am still a week or so away from starting it for the first time. My pulley is approx 1/4 inch larger than the Chrysler pulley .I reused the valve from the Chrysler pump in the GM pump so the Volare hose would screw into the pump.

Bump.
There is a problem with the Volare ifs being a little too touchy. It responds too well with the higher pressure being produced by other than mopar pumps. At least that is what I have been told by others on this site. There is a fix involving the changeout of the internal pressure relief valve in the pump. I have never done this, but hopefully somebody else will come along with the tech expertise to advise you on the procedure. The changing of the pump wheel sounds like it might provide the same lower pressure necessary to make the steering a little tamer. Good luck, Jag

I'm running the mopar pump on mine and it is fine. The GM pump puts out higher pressure and makes it twitchy. The ford pump is more compatable but is sluggish at slow engine speed. Wich can make parking take a little more effort but beats nonpower any day. Also is your alignment good the GM pump will amplify any ill effects of a misalignment problem.

Actually , the same pump fits the Volare and some GMs as well as Ford. The valve ,which I switched in mine , the pulley , and the reservoir being different between the applications. The reservoir is different because of the shape and the angle of the fill spout which would not affect the pressure of the pump. I'm anxious to see how mine steers . I should know in a few days. I hope.
