Hi y'all.Glad to have found this site and be a member.
Heres the scoop.Just purchased a 72 Ranger XLT w/390.I've been hearing a lot about the 352 & 105 stamp. Here's a new one for me.My engine is original to the truck(supposedly)and according to Pat Ganahl after 74 all replacement 428 blocks were bored out 391 engines characterized by vertical ribs on the outside of the block. Now ,I have such a block. Is there a way to verify this.

Check the flywheel for counterweights, also measure the stroke with a dowel or piece of wire by taking a spark plug out and then manually turning the engine over while someone marks how far up and down the dowel goes in the cylinder. The vertical rib blocks were also used for 390's and 360's. the 428 will measure right around 4" while the 390 will be 3 3/4" and the 360 3 and a half
thumper, most likely original to that truck is 352, no 428s ever installed. Hope you get it worked out and end up with a fine hot rod.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
I ran all the numbers through the on - line registry and it came back as 390.Heads are c8ae-h ,not ready for the teardown yet so I haven'tgot to much more info, but I noticed the ribbing on the block and I was kinda p'd , cause it would explain what a dog she is right now . Time for a rebuild thats for sure but I don't want to waste it on a 391!
650, It would not be a 'waste' if you had a 391. The 391FT was not put into pickups from the factory, but some have been swapped in occasionally. If you had one, you would have reason to jump for joy. The 391FT has a beefier block with thicker cylinders, this gives you the oppourtunity to bore out to 428 size. Most FTs also have 3 webs on the mains instead of only 2. The FT also has a very strong forged steel crank. The bad part of an FT are the restrictive cylinder heads, fortunately for us the heads from a FE will bolt right on! I have some FT parts that I wouldn't part with for anything . DF
Just out of curiosity, are the c8ae-h 2 or 4 barrel heads?I'm a Ford buff from way back but this is my first venture into the BB domain. Also , which header company would I look into because let me tell ya there's no room.I was thinking of putting a 351 Cleveland into the old girl(have 1970 with the quench heads)but want to keep original for show and appraisal purposes
The 391 had a forged steel crank that is identified by a snout on the front of it that is about 2 in. in diameter. They usually have ribs on the block but so did the 360, 390 428. You probably have the original or correct engine. That 390 has a lot of potential.
