i have an 89 f150 i6 4speed. and i want to put a 5.0 HO out of an 89 lincoln mark VII in it, i have the motor, but would i have to change the computer since my trucks a standard and the lincoln is an automatic? and would the tranmission from the truck bolt up to the 302?
Since your truck was a 6 cylinder, you need the complete engine harness and a computer for the V8. If the Lincoln had an AOD then that computer will be fine. The 5.0 and 4.9 share the same bellhousing bolt pattern, it'll bolt to your tranny. If your instrument cluster has a tach it will read high with the V8 as well.
how will it read high. i would need to replace the whole wiring harness? wow, thats a little bit more of a bargain thatn i wanted. the truck is my daily driver for now. as far as i know its the AOD, 3 speed with the overdrive.
You need to replace the whole wiring harness because the electronics are in very different places between the two engines and some of the connectors won't reach. Plus, you won't be able to fire two injectors because the six wiring harness only has connectors for six injectors.
Why did you think that wouldn't be a problem?
Just keep the six. It's a great motor. If you want something that goes fast, buy a mustang.
i didnt think it wouldnt be a problem. im just gonne buy the lincoln itself and fix it. then buy a 390 out of a 70's truck and put in mine. i dont feel like fewing aroubnd with the wiring harness. i done that on my old truck and its a headache. this electronic stuff is pointless
put in the lincoln motor, rip off the EFI, plug up the injector ports, and drop on an edelbrock carb and intake... or just keep the 300, because it will out last the 5.0 by a good bit, 'specially if you like to beat on it much...
i beat the crap out of the motor occasionally. its a good motor but its been giving me problems, exspecially the past 2 days. it left me stranded int he middle of downtown lex. ky at rush hour. and i thought it was the fuel filter. put one on and it ran till this afternoon. it started about 3 weeks ago. it started missing and dieing down after i took off from a stop sign, push the clutcj in, clear up, ease it out, do it again. rev it up, ease clutch out its fine, till the next morning, then the same thing. then it stopped for about 2 weeks, then done it to me on man o war. cleared up. the died and wouldnt run hardly at all yesterday. replaced filter ran good. then while leaving work it done it, i pushed the clutch in and it ran at about 50 rpm, then lined its self out, then done it to me leaving autozone, then of all things, the slave cylinder broke in half. AAAAHHHHHHH

Pointless?
Less emissions, more precise fuel metering (meaning better mpg while maintaining power), perfect cold starts every time regardless of weather and temperature.
And EFI is completely tunable if you have the right tools. You can make all sorts of interesting changes in timing, fuel maps etc and they don't have to be linear in nature like a carb which bases it's fuel flow on airflow past a venturi. With EFI you can double the fuel, cut it in half, and adjust it anywhere in between at any point or multiple points across the RPM range.
One can even control enrichment specifically for hard throttle use with the defaults for light throttle use being much leaner.
Certainly do what you like, but by no means is the electronic dodads "useless".
its all allot more expensive. its much easier, not to mention the extra room and the engine compartment isnt all cluttered up in a carburated vehicle as is the efi. i dont like fuel injection, they are good untill something breaks and you have to spend a fortune just finding out what broke. i could care less about emissions. my trucks cats and smog pump have already been removed, and i LOVE the smell of the exhaust compared to the "egg fart" smell of bad cats. I6 with true dual magnaflos that sound pretty good actually
