i have a 98 2.5L ranger. The last couple weeks the idle when it was cold as gotten rougher and rougher to the point it will hardly run/sometimes will die (cuts out as it would if it was not getting gas). It will idle up then drop down and continue doing this. After it warms up it seems to go away for the most part, but will still cut out every once in a while. My check engine soon light was on and i had it read at AZ, i got a printed off report and it gave me the p0401 code. So i changed my DPFE sensor and my EGR valve and it is still acting the same. I read some information about the EGR system and saw that it is not activated when the engine is cold and idleing, so i wondered if it could be something else causing my problems. The check engine soon light has not came back on yet, but i have not really driven it much since then. I wondered if my cat could be plugged in my exhaust. Any feedback or ideas would be great and much appreicated. Thanks.......
The EGR codes were probably not connected to your idle problem. It sounds like your IAC valve is acting up ( Idle Air Control Valve). I have had these act up with out setting a code.
Try takeing it off and cleaning it out, This is sometimes a quik fix and usually is not pemanent, but it would be worth a try.
Also Check for any Vacuum leaks as they will mess with the Idle also.
Thanks...I will check that IAC valve....can you tell me exactly where that is located at, if not i can check online and find it. Could my EVR be causing this problem too. I've always noticed that the bottom tube that feeds into the EVR has been disconnected and a screw has been inserted in it to disrupt the air flow or create a vaccum (just guessing???). I always figured it could be a quick fix someone did at one point. I have taken that out and put the hose back on, but the problem continues. I thought about taking that off and cleaning it, but didnt' know if that would help or not. Thanks for the replies........
