Well hopefully you didn't overlook the obvious of removing exhaust restrictions. The big cork is the stock muffler. I looked inside mine and found the one tube inside the muffler had about 1.75" ID, which is about 32% restricted from the ID of the 2.25" piping. I fixed it with a performance muffler. I heard that a free flowing muffler will give you 90 to 95% the performance of a cat-back exhaust system. As for the cats, if your's is newer they should be fine, but if an 80s truck may need to buy high flow cats too. I would not get a header, but use the EFI dual manifolds. Can have them worked to provide better flow, but they are decent as is and are durable unlike some/most headers.
