Side steps or nerf bars, what do you have?

I need something to make it easier for my girlfriend to get into my truck. But there are so many brands out there, I can't make up my mind. I'd prefer something that doesn't hang down too far and something made in the USA. No China crap for me... I've seen steps on other trucks that are rusted, so good quality is a plus. What do you recommend?

The Tech tubes on our Sierra are still in good shape. I don't know many brands...

I would get her a stool as those nerf bars are great stump catchers off/road. I would have them tore off in a week ha ha. If you must have them however, smittybuilt, grizzly, westin are a few manufactures, www.jcwhitney.com is a great place to shop on line with a large selection as they offer the ones that I've mentioned at good prices.

Since most women like jumping up into a truck anyway, there isn't any need for them.

I do agree.

At the same time, I have them on the Silverado, which I'm pretty sure rides lower than the Ranger. I have Westin's...installed the day the truck was purchsed in Feburary '00. While they look good and will happily support a ton of weight, the paint is starting to come off in tiny peices, thus allowing rust to form. And this is in the South, about as far as you get from the salt/rust belt as possible.

I'm going to pull them off, strip them down, paint, and clear coat sometime later this year.

Since my "girl"-friend is approaching 60, the prospects of her actually jumping into the truck are diminishing.

Actually, she's pretty spry, but the main problem is that she has unusually short legs. She can clamber in now by using the grab handle, but after I install the lift kit, she'll need some help.

Thanks for those pointers Wendell, but the question is, what would YOU get?
Something that doesn't hang too low (don't want to rip it off).
Something that isn't going to rust in a year.
Something not made in China...

Dont worry about ripping them off. That is to say unless you actually off-road. I have diamond plate aluminum running boards on my truck. Its an 88 and they still look pretty good.

Seriously you get what you pay for. Generally the black "powder coat" will be the first to rust. So if you go with chrome that may last longer. Plus it depends on how often you wash them, etc...

No kidding. And they're a lot stronger than they look...I've slammed mine down on countless curbs, they don't bend. They'll take the hit and hold up just fine. I'd imagine them doing more damage to most stuff they hit rather than getting damaged themselves.

They make them that are stainless steel that won't be bad to rust or peel, but are a bit more pricey, most suppliers should have the SS option. Personally, I like smittybuilt and grizzly.

By the way, I didn't realize your girlfriend was an older lady, by all means get the bars. When people mention a girlfriend, you automatically think of the younger crowd. I wheel alot in the mountains in W,Va, nerf bars would pack with mud or get caught on a stump and get me stuck, at least try to get me stuck, thats why I don't care for them. However, they do have thier place and purpose. It may not be too many years before I have to have them myself ha ha.

Well, you have a lot of different options. Check out our nerf bar and truck step department page and there are several product reviews that will give you deeper insight into what you are looking for. You will see some of the brands mentioned like WAAG, Westin, etc.
