I am planning on changing the fluid in my five speed because it shifts kind of notchy. I know there's some confusion with what to use, I would like to know what my options are. I live in Nebraska, and we have hot summers and cold winters. My truck is a 96 with 85,000 on it. Basically my questions are:
What kind of fluid should I use? ATF or some kind of MTF?
Is there any brand or weight that would be the best?
And lastly, is it easiest to buy the pump thing or go through the shifter?
By the way I know there are other forums where this would probably fit better but I think I'll get more answers here.
well i run normal ATF in my M5OD. and just get the hand pump to fill it. there is a fill plug above the drain plug in the drivers side of the tranny. that is the easiest way...that i would think at least.
Use ATF Ford suggests Mercon/Dexron. I bought a bottle adapter that's about a foot long with clear hose it has a valve where it screws on the bottle and a black cap. Either go in through the shifter or the fill plug. If you go through the shifter it seems like more trouble to me dealing with those screws, if you drop on you can't see which way it went from inside the truck. Some people use the top off a gear oil bottle and a piece of hose.
When I changed my m5od fluid I used Royal Purple synchromax all synthetic fluid. I think it shifts smoother and it is more quiet than it was before. R P is kind of expensive though.
I have 20w50 in mine. Its a little stiff in the winter though till it warms up.
I park mine on a hill when i fill it, passenger side low. So i can get a bit extra fluid in there. M5OD needs fluid, and overfilling a bit wont hurt it as long as its not to far above the drain hole. Pluss i know its full when i check it, fluid comes out of the hole.
I just use a plastic bottle to squeeze for filling. 20W-50 maybe a little stiff for best mileage. I use John Deere Hygard which Deere uses in all their heavy transmissions. Which is just hydraulic oil.
