97 7.3 with transmishion problems help?

Is the fluid fresh? I am not the pro at tjhis so just check the basics and the pros will be here soon.
Explain a little better though. When it goes into gear nothing wrong ( in first gear only?). When it lags do you mean between shifts 1-2 or 2-3 or 3-4 or all? What do you mean , when it shifts into drinve, Do you mean 3rd or 4th? Answer some of these the best you can and the true auto pros will be here soon.

If you have any programmers or mods you should return the truck to stock.
Have it scanned for codes even if the CEL is off. No scanner? Most tranny shops will scan it for free. They want your biz. They must drive the truck to scan it correctly, go with them and watch the scanner.
Is the OD lite in the shifter handle flashing?
Do the easy things first. Check fluid level and condition. New filter and fluid is always a good thing. Take a look at all the connectors on the trans and check them for loose, corroded, bent or burnt pins and sockets in the connectors.
