20 Mpg!

If my calculations are correct I'm getting around 20 mpg in my truck! This is around town driving with no load (there is a railroad tie in the bed of truck) and I don't drive it hard just normal. I have been adding Marvel mystery oil to every tank full of diesel. This is based on my rear tank which I think is 17 gallons. I ran it way down in the red on E the other day then filled it full and it only held 15.2 gallons. Anyone else know for sure the size of a stock rear fuel tank on a 97 F350 dually?

Rear tank about 19 gallons. When my tank is on empty I have about 5 gallons remaining in them. 20 mpg is good for a F350. I get about 16 empty and 10 pulling my tailer. I gross out A 19500 lbs with my fifth wheel trailer.

O.K. if mine is a 19 gallon tank then I'm still getting about 18.5 mpg, I'll take that for 97 F350 with 271K miles.

I don't know how you're figuring the MPG but the size of the tank has nothing to do with it the way i calculate MPG. How are you doing it?

when i check mpg. i fill up, reset trip odo, drive till 1/4 or 1/8 tank left. fill all the way up again. take trip odo divided by gallons shown on pump at fill up (i know that's a whole discussion on whether those are accurate or not) that should take out the guesswork on how much the tank holds. if u just wanna know for knowledge, i dont know.

I cant test MPG in my truck...the Speedometer is 'slow' and the odometer is 'fast'...
at 70 MPH my speedometer registers nearly 85 mph
in mileage measurement I go 5 miles but register 6 miles...This one is only approximate...

You quoted Skittle and said that is how you do it, that is the way cuda was referrencing also, I know what you were doing though, it seems to me that you haven't filled up your rear tank yet, and you are eyeballing, saying I am gonna put about 18 gallons in and I went 350 miles so that should be around 19.4. but you haven't actually filled up ,,,Right?

I would doubt very seriously that you are getting that kind of gas mileage. I am not suggesting that you are untruthful, I just think you might be off just a bit with your system. I would bet that I am lucky to get 16-17 mpg in town and I have the CC 350 non-dually rear-end.

The main problem that the rear tank poses is that you can NEVER get 19 gallons into it, at least not mine. I can usually only squeeze 14-15 gallons into it before it begins frothing at the mouth. But with that said, you can easily keep a rolling log of gallons put in and keep resetting the trip odometer for an overall average. I am too lazy to keep track. I will put a turbo on my truck, but cant seem to do the simple, easy things.........lol.

Suber to be honest I have thought the same thing. I really want it to be right but every time I push the gas pedal down I think, 18-20 mpg? No way. I do have a Tymar set-up and my exhaust is a straight pipe from headers all the way back. Also, my exhaust has been shortened and comes out just behind the rear passenger side door. I love the sound but some people don't or don't like the look.

so let me get this straight. Out of your guys trucks, with both tanks, then your getting close to 800 miles before you actually have to fill it up again? if this is true, then mine is WAYYYYY bad as I am only getting about 440 miles before I have to fill BOTH tanks up again. This could be bad on me............

I have the same upgrades on my truck, and I really should for accuracy sake keep a log. I am curious but I am betting 16-17 in town.
