well i went to set my timming today and well it didnt go to well. the timming is id guess about 80-90 degrees out from 0 with the timming gun set at 15 with the shorting bar disconnected. I checked out the rotor at #1 tdc the rotor is pionting at the #6, also played with the distr the close's i was able to get was about 24-25 out and once i plugged the shorting bar back in the truck wouldn't start.
So here is my question did i miss something? some step?
or is it that the timming gears where not lined up right by the last guy and know i have to fix that?. id prefer to do all the checks i can before takeing the front of the engine apart.
But if i have to take the valve cover off and other stuff off to fix this problem what upgrades can i do while its apart?? since what the heck why take it apart twice right
the truck is a 1995 4.9 efi 4x4 without a mass air flow all help would be great thanks
Sounds like someone put the distributor in wrong and moved wires around on the distributor cap to compensate for the error. Here's what I would try: Rotate the engine until N0.1 cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke. Pull the distributor out, and reinstall it with the rotor pointing to N0.1 plug wire hole on distributor. Then make sure all the plug wires are going to the proper plugs based on the firing order of the engine and distributor rotation. After all this is done, start the engine and check your timing. You may get some other ideas, but this is where I would start.
What timming marks are you using? You may all ready know this and if so sorry. But the cast marks in the timming cover on the drivers side (looking over the front) is the wrong marks.
There is a metal tab on the passenger side and hard to see!
