I think it would be a lot cheaper an a lot less trouble to just replace the ball joints with greasable ones. If the ones you have aren't out I would just run them until they go out and then replace them with new greasable ones.
Drilling and tapping metal is easy as long as you use the right equipment (HHS bits working your way up to the right size and a 3 flute tap, 4 flute ones are for wood generally) and oil. I'd be afraid however of waekening the ball joint in the wrong spot and then making it fail.
Speaking of failing, ball joints on Super Dutys are notoroious for failing so I would just wait till they need replacement and then get one with the zerts installed already. I am on my second set after 50k and they have been tightened once also.
My 04 f350 has zerks in all four , did them right after I got the truck home , if you cut the wheels all the way one direction ,then rotate the axle joint , you can just get a long drill bit in there ,and tap the hole , buy a magnetic drain plug and remove the magnet , it will remove any metal particles left in there from above operation , use the 90 degree fitting in the uppers just clears the axle when spun around , Ive had very good luck with mobil 1 syn red grease , Craig.PS: WHEN I LOOKED IN THE HOLE AFTER i CLEANED WITH MAGNET, I COULD NOT SEE ANY GREASE !!!!
there are self tapping zerks. drill the right size hole and thread them in. not sure about the size, drill somthing and test the zerk until your find the right size. moog jointts are greassable. use synthetic and they wil last the life of the truck.

Where are you getting your information from?? I have three tap and die sets for metals at home and most of the taps are four-flute taps. In larger(industrial) sizes they have even more flutes. I even went out and bought a tap that I only use for grease fittings, a NAPA T-207 1/4"X28 NF Plug Tap. It is used with a No. 3 drill and is a four-flute tap.
I purchased the greasable moog ball joints and the clearance tolerances are abit to tight on the top ball joint. I've got some marring on my right ujoint and the grease fitting broke off on the left. The bottom ball joints will last me forever but the top left one will have to be replaced eventually...
It's a pain in the tail but I put Moogs in my F-350 and I pull the top plug and screw in the 90 degree zerk, grease it and put the plug back in. It beats replacing the ball joint.
