rebuild

i got this in the 67-79 too... anyway, I was planning on getting a new engine installed in my 68 f100 360cid. I called one place near me... They gave me an estimate for 2,300 for a new engine and install. I was wondering If i should just get mine rebuilt. What are the price comparisons. I would get a shop to do it for me. What do they do exactly when they rebuild a engine like mine. How much would it run for a shop to rebuild my engine. My engine now has a 2bbl carb with headers and 190,000 miles on it. Please help me make a decision, im only 17 and i want to make the right choice. You guys are pretyy much my only source for info on what to do, cus i dont know if these shops are ripping me off.
Thanks.

I do all my own engine work/rebuilding except machine work and I know a bore/balance/stock head rebuild machine work is usually 1000.00.You need to sit down and determine what you want, stock rebuild, mild performance,street/strip,stump puller, etc.or what you are going to do in the future.A good built short block ie.. forged pistons,polished/shotpeened rods w/ bolts, balanced, windage tray,HV oil pump, will allow you to bolt on bigger cams, heads, induction and not have to worrie about lower end problems. If you can afford it use your engine as a base, a 390 crank, rods and pistons will fit your block.Check the web, ebay ,etc.. there is alot of good deals out there.I'm a hot rodder is all my engines are built with a short block like I described above, stock just plains sucks..LOL

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Jan-02 AT 04:41 PM (EST)] Chris900, if you brought your truck to the shop where I work, it would cost you around 2000$. Figure 600 for an R&R and 1400 for the engine. That would get you a complete dissasembly of your engine, and all of your parts cleaned in a thermal system. The block would get Magnafluxed and bored and honed. The crank would get ground. The heads would get surfaced and given guide liners and a valve job, with hard exhaust seats if you need them (your '68 would ) . The valve job includes cutting 3 angles on the seats and grinding the valve face. Everything gets put back together with new bearings, new pistons and waterpump, and new camshaft and lifters. I would highly recommend an extra 100$ or so to change out your crank and rods for 390 pieces. If an FE goes through our shop, the oil fixes will be done and you will have a HV pump. What does your 2300 quote include ? DF

I can't recommend any specific shop because I live in Lincoln, Nebraska, but I DO recommend asking around at good parts houses. Like I said, they know who's good and who's bad . Ask around at different stores about Steve's Mobile Repair.

Chris900, ask the shop where you are going if they can do the oil fixes for you, it is cheap insurance against future problems. A better oil pan is not much money and helps even more. To anyone else out there looking, Jasper will not rebuild your engine. They will sell you one of theirs and give you credit towards the core charge when you turn in your original. Maybe that is important to you, maybe not. And they are far more expensive than anybody else. DF
