So I was at the farm for a wedding this weekend, and the Sunday after I had some minor truck work to do (read oil change) So I changed that and gave her the ol' once over. I'd been hearing a noise for a couple days prior, and when I started I thought I should check it out, but, alas, I forgot. No big deal I thought, I can check them when I'm back in the city. So today, I'm out checkin things out, saw it wasn't a brake issue, so moved onto the wheel bearings. Picked the left side up, and sure enough, its sloppy. ****, lets check the right side. Pick the right side up, and my whole freakin wheel is loose! Cept its not loose lug nuts, the studs are spinnin! So I went from what I thought was brake pads at worst, to havin an undrivable truck!
Now I need some advice. I need to get the wheel off, but with the studs spinning I'm not quite sure how to do it. Keep in mind that I am way understocked when it comes to tools here. All I have is a good, but basic, set of hand tools (SAE & Metric wrenches, 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" SAE & Metric sockets) and no air. I tried positioning the wheel so it would create more pressure on the studs, but they still spun.
is there any way to get at the back of the stud?? maybe grind it off, or somehow pinch it to stop from spinning. worse comes to worse, a bit of weld on them it you have access to a welder...just some thoughts
Can't weld it, as I can't get to the backside of....... anything.
Can't take the hub off - the rotor and hub are one piece. In order to do that I have to take the wheel bearings out, which will eventually happen, once I get the wheel off. The only way I could take it off would to be to take right axle out, which considering its a TBB......
Your really in a pickle. I would say to remove the rotor and weld the studs so you could remove the wheel but the axle hubs are only removable with the wheels off. Another way would be to remove the caliper to weld the studs but you can't remove the caliper as it would hit the wheel.
The only way I could see it would be to destroy the dust cover and then weld the studs. Then remove the lug nuts with an impact.
