Oh, OK. My bad. I was comparing it to something brand-new, fully reprogrammable, etc.. But the basic message was the same- don't mess with the computer.

Maybe a smurf bat...won't leave any splinters that way.

Do your research young man. Plan your plan, run it by the Forum, adapt and improvise
and share your progress with us.

well, I wanna say hi to everyone for starters and not to hijack this thread but i've been doing research off and on for a couple of months and have been wondering a few things, for starters I have a 1991 F150 XLT lariat 4x4 with a 4.9EFI and a 5speed trans.

first things first:

the odometer reads 71,XXX but i know for a fact that the speedo screw is off by like ten mph, i drove the truck from Rochester, MN to Phoenix, AZ (in 23 hours, Kansas oklahoma and texas went by quick along with tucumcari to flagstaff.) and it only said i went 1430 miles according to the truck OD. i know for a fact i went 1700 at least.

How hard is it to fix this issue, and where do I start?
also, with the mileage on the truck, the only problems i really have are the belt whining pretty bad for like 2 seconds when i start the truck, and the rear end dripping out of what I assume is the coupling for the pinionshaft/u-joint/driveshaft.
what does it take to fix this?

and in the spirit of performance, and keeping in mind i have to get this truck to pass Phoenix Emissions, what kind of modification can I make to this and keep the EFI set up. i'm not looking to spank camaros or out pull 3/4 tons or anything crazy, i just want a little more out of her.

I see a lot of people suggesting intake/cam/headers, but will that affect the emmissions testing of the truck negatively?

if i put the headers on it, what kind of set up should I look at from the headers back? I was thinking of splitting the exhaust instead of a y pipe, running a cat off each and running the pipe to dump before the rear wheels. I was also considering buying the K&N intake, or building my own and putting a K&N filter on it.
also, does anyone have any kind of spec or experience with the clifford cam, like what I should expect as far as performance?

Continuing down the performance tangent, is there any other kind of things that could be done with the truck to improve performance? is it possible to swap parts from 302 V8's such as throttle bodies, injectors, and such? a friend of mine has a 5.0 in a lincoln mark VII with a powerdyne supercharger. he told me i could have the whole car for 500 bucks if i pull it out of his yard. the motor blew rods or something like that but is junk in the bottom end. i've toyed with the idea (and only after rebuilding a straight six with newer parts and insuring the structural integrity of it. cant just slap on a blower on any old rusty block can you?) of putting the blower in my truck. nothing crazy like 3-5 lbs of boost. maybe half a bar. would the trans/transfer case/differentials hold up to this much of a power increase? i'd predict somewhere in the 30-40hp range with headers, cam, intake, more free flowing exhaust, and the possibility of a blower would bump that up another 20-30 right?

well my plan is to use the k&n for more air flow since you guys suggest i increase the fuel flow with injectors and a FPR, i had been looking into a cam but not sure which one, a few are listed on summit racing's website. What brand are you guys using? right know i have to fix a suspension issue im having since i lowered my truck. i used dream beams to lower the front 3 inches but im replacing that with just lowering springs cause the tires are rubbing too much. then ima add a front anti sway bar seeing as for some reason my truck has neither the front or the back one. Im sure this model didnt come with any though cuz my uncle has one too and its got no sway bar either. I wont need the dream beams any more nor the rear flip kit so i have a spare lowering kit if anyone is interested, nearly new. The reason it rubs is because i reaised the backa bit and so its higher in the back than the front. Also does anyone know the most hp this engine can make with the mods you guys suggested? And would it be worth using a 3.73 on the rear. thanks, and i only have one bat and its really small so it wont cause that much damage!

I'd say skip the megasquirt. I don't think it'll get you anything until you do radical mods like a turbo/blower.

That's a very popular cam. Crane 260 dual-pattern. Makes power everywhere, and seems to be OK with EFI systems. I've got one sitting in my living room waiting to be installed.

3.73 could be a good choice for performance with your overdrive tranny. What gears do you have now? (check your axle code). I've got 3.70s with no overdrive in my 76, and it'll go on the highway, but it screams above about 65. My old 88 F150 300-6 had 3.55s with .8 overdrive, and it cruised nicely on the highway.

ive checked my gears its got 3.08 on it. my tranny is the E4OD. I mean i can probably get the rear end off an explorer to get the LSD and the 3.73, or i can buy the 3.73 new and keep the open diff. I had trouble finding computer controlled cams but il try your suggestion let me know how much better it gets with the cam after you intall it.

RE: the 3.73 gear. On a street truck I think that would be a waste. First gear is already useless with 3.08's unless you are pulling something pretty heavy, why make it more so with 3.73's? With 3.08's I'm out of motor at the end of the track, with 3.73's I'd have to shift to 5th gear. With an E4OD it wouldn't hurt that bad on the highway, but first would still be pretty useless.
