I have an 01 250 HD v 10 automatic. I am wondering what all of the talk about the gearing is about. What are the differences. I think mine has a 3.75 gearing. The engine runs really strong and has plenty of pulling power, but doesn't seem to have a lot of puch. Or is there anything else I should be figuring out. MPG's are acutally better than I thought about 12-15. Runs smooth without any smoke.
Gears make faster use of higher RPM power/toque. It is mostly a problem with larger than stock sized tires, it reduces final drive ratio and kill your take off. Gears bring your final drive ratio back up or higher so you get more power during a launch.
If you have stock tires, then 4.11 is as low as you should consider. I am very happy with my 4.56 and 35"s. If you want more jump off the line, you should look at valve bodies and torque converters, neither should reduce your mileage but both will make the trans/truck feel lighter.
What kind of a job is it to do those two mods. and brand specifics would you suggest. I bought the truck for a weekend/hunting vehicle, and realized its a beast. It an awsome truck and think I have decided improve it to something that would be more fun to drive. Plus It's would be cool to get everything out of the v10
BTS (Brians Truck Shop) makes arguably the best replacement Valve Body. Pretty simple job just a bit messy. You probably need to change your tranny fluid anyways. I don't thiink I'd wouldn't mess with the torque converter yet, you can get better results in other areas.
If you really want to open the v10 up, Banks makes a pretty decent setup that really helps and sound super cool. The 6.8 @ 6k and smoking the tires sounds like a hotrod.
I'm sure theres some programmers out there, check in the v10 forum and see what everyone is running.
I got it from a dealer and I can tell you the trans fluid had to be replaced. I got a really good deal because they couldn't get the service engine light to go off. Also I don't think the gas milage fired anyone up so it sat on the lot for a while and they came down a lot on the price. They said they would give me a 30 warranty. Well the front seal started leaking so they replaced it and changed the fluid also replaced both hubs since it would go into 4wd. Oh yeh, I took the truck to a friend with a good code reader and the knock sensor was tripped causing the code. He looked for a while and something had chewed the sensor wire and he replaced the wire. Suprised the dealer didn't notice!
