so to start off its a 460, 5 spd, 4 wheel drive used to be a farm truck and I just bought I dont know anything about the history of the truck. When I originally test drove the trk it ran fine the check engine light was on and the abs light was on I fixed the abs light problem and ran the codes on the engine came back with 4 codes for tps sensor and 1 for map sensor. After a few days of driving it started giving me trouble with the trk empty at the bottom of the gears its very sluggish even sometimes sputtering and if you give it throttle it will backfire thru the intake. Sounds bad right? So I went ahead and changed the tp sensor problem still there then I changed the map sensor problem got worse it will last about 4 miles then it starts acting up as long as you keep it in the higher side of the gear it runs good. Also to add a little more to your thoughts I have a grayish smoke coming out of the exhaust. Please help I'm stumped and this is why I work on semi's and not little cars thanks in advance I know you guys can help
Is the tps sensor adjustable, if so it needs to be calibrated. Other than that it sounds like you have vacuum leak. Get some parts wash or carb spray and start squirting away very slowly to find the vacuum leak. O the smoke thing make sure the head gaskets aren't leaking or is it just condensation after the cat and the muffler get warmed up?
Have you done a tune-up? Plugs, wires, GOOD cap and rotor could be a big part of the sputtering under load. Use MotorCraft parts for best results.
Get yourself a Haynes or Chilton's manual and be sure you have the new TPS adjusted right. MAP sensor I don't have and am not familiar with but again the manual can help there too.
I'd make sure I had the basic's in good shape and then tackle other problems.
Ive got the plugs just havent put them in yet really not looking very fun I had an 89 f250 w/5.8 and they werent fun and for some reason Im thinkin 7.5 is gonna be a lot worse but i will wait to put them in until I get all the parts together and just do it all at once and on the smokin the yahoo that owned it b4 me took the cat out it still has an o2 sensor though it does it for a while after initial start up, after it warms up it only does it at idle gray smoke
thanks for the help so far
I'll bet your cat converters about shot .... for one .... It probly idled alot on a farm along with alot of slow driving , short trips and such .... and converters hate long idling and short trips .
I dont have a catalytic convertor it is gone and replaced with a section of pipe going to some god awful sounding glasspack that pops everytime i let off the throttle. Im gonna try to get the parts together for a tune up weds or thurs and see were it gets me
It does sound to me like there is a tune up issue going on here, but there is a very strong possibility that the exhaust system on this beast is partly to blame. How large is it? If it is overly large, it could cause hesitation at low rpm. However, the midrange and top end would be great.
The smoke suggests a rich mixture or poor combustion. Let us know if that tune up fixes it.
Clean the throttle body also. You need some back pressure at lower RPM. You probably should put a good exhaust system back on it including cat. Someone else might help with this, if it has duel's I believe you need the cross over pipe. That can cause problems.
ok the exhaust is all factory from the manifolds to where the cat used to be another question i'll add is I thought the truck is supposed to have an o2 sensor b4 and after the cat and I only have one. on the fuel issue I've got to get a gauge today but I am very much including that possibility in the equation the high pressure pump doesnt sound that great. I'll keep yuall updated
