My son acquired an old 1988 T-bird V6 With an AOD. The car sat in my mom's garage for several years. Her husband started the engine and ran it for twenty minutes once a week but never ran it thru the gears, or put it on the road to excercise the tranny.
He is telling me now it takes forever to shift from one to two, and it is pretty hard. I am not an AOD man but have done several C-4's and C-6's. Is this tranny electronic with elec. shift servos? It sounds to me like it has a standard valve body with a gummed up valve. I would love to help him fix it.
It is not an electronic trans. It could be a sticking valve, but it is much more likely that the governor is sticking. It's inside the tailhousing. Remove the driveshaft, support the trans, remove the trans mount, then remove the tailshaft housing. The governor is on the output shaft.
