hello, im am wanting to change all of the fluids in my truck, it is a 1988 f-250 4x4, 5.8. the trans says zf, and the door tag says trans code (z). oil type (esp 142c 166-11). oil cap 3.2 liters. well my ? is what does the oil code mean and what kind of oil to use. another is there a oil fill and oil drain plug? i can see one plug close to the bottom. where is the other? and what all do i need to get to do it. thank you
allen
it is a manual trans with od.
Most guys use ATF in their manual transmissions, works just fine. Some companies also make Manual Transmission Fluid, I believe Redline is one of them.
The plug near the bottom is your drain plug. To fill it you can lift the shifter boot in the cab and fill it from there.
thank you, when i take the shifter boot off is there anywhere that you pour or do you just pour it in? and i suppose that i could look in my wife cookbooks but how much is 3.2 liters in quarts? and how critical is the level or how do you check it? allen
And no, you don't just lift the boot and pour it in. I have never done it personally since my transmission is an auto but I know there is something that must be unscrewed underneath the boot.
i will pull the boot this week and take a look thank you. i tried looking for the conversion in the cookbook but all i got was hungry. hahaha. any way i will get 4 quarts of mercon and figure it out. i was looking at what i need in the transer case and it seems to use mercon also is this correct if yes how much?
Yup, that will also use Mercon ATF. I believe it is around 2 quarts but you better double check the owners manual for that. The rule of them is just to fill it on a level surface until it starts to spill over the fill hole.
You can just use the fill plug on the side of the trans, save's you from pulling the shift boot, and you also have to pull the shifter out. Since your under there pulling the drain plug out, you might as well pull the fill plug out as well.
also, on a unrelated not chris, i would like to put pics up, but#1 somewhere i read that i could not post attachments,and#2 how would i get the pic up to the post. i would really like to show my custom bumper and other kinda cool stuff on my truck?
You can host the pictures on an external site like -----------, imageshack, supermotors, etc. Then you can post LINKS to those pictures in the forums. If your surround the links with {img} tags --- use ['s instead of {'s --- then they will post DIRECTLY in the forum, like this:
ok i will try to get them set up, i will try to get set up on photobucket, since that is what everybody seems to use. hopefully i can figure it out, i have been trying to restore this truck, it was used for a fire truck, it has low miles, but the miles that were on must have been hard ones, hence all the info i recieve on here. thank you for the advice. are you going to put your bumper on.
Hahah yeah I'm gonna get around to the bumper eventually. That project kind of fell on the back burner when I got more obsessed with performance mods. It's a garage decoration for the time being
i understand, making a bumper and doing other mods, make for a long build, my bumper took almost 5 months all while i was fixing my everlasting oil leaks.

With all due respecct, only guys that run M50D's and ZF's are the ones who run the ATF. If you tried to run a T18/19 or another old tranny on ATF, the outcome would not be good because they were designed to run something much thicker than ATF.
