Need help diagnosing a problem. I have a 98 explorer, 185000 km's. have a growl noise coming from the front end. Can almost feel it under my foot. You can really hear and feel it at lower speeds. Last week I put in new outer bearing hubs on the front and the growl noise is still there loud as ever. My local mechanic says it may be differential bearings. Is this common on these explorers. No one thinks its the cv joints as they dont click around corners. One guy says it may be frt ujoints on the frt drive shaft. Just curious as to what those in the know think as to a noticable frt end noise. Thanks for all advice. P.S. could seperated tires make this kind of noise.
Dont know whats causing your growling noise, but I dont think its tread separation. In my experience, tread separation sounds more like shot gun blast!
front hubs was a good guess, thats it 90% of the time. first i would remove the front drive shaft. to try to narrow donw the differential problmes i think i would jack up the wheels and take off the brake disk on each side. rotate one hafl shaft by hand and hold the other stationary. have someone listen to the pumpkin and see what you hear. also check the backlash by moving one axle back and forth and see how much movement to get the pinion sahft to move. you might even drain the front gear lube and see what comes out, then listen thru the drain hole while roling the axle shaft.--- axle failure is not that common, but its either the differential or the transfer case, after you eliminate the drive sahft universal.
Just an update to my frt end noise problem. On the weekend I did the easiest check first. I put the frt tires to the back and backs on the frt. Noise almost totally gone. Just normal road noise for tires that are nearing the end. Unbelivable the noise the frt tires made. Must be a internal problem with the belts or something. Sure glad I didnt have to get into the frt diff or cv joints. Thanks for the replys to my question.
