Size matters

I have a 2002 4.6L F-150 with 78k miles and I wanted to see what are the different ways that I could, or even should, go about adding 4-5 inches to my truck. I was told that I could accomplish this by making some changes with my shocks instead of the expensive route of a lift kit, but I don't know what the safety issues would be with either method.

There is no way to lift a truck that high with just shocks no matter what you do to your truck. The cheapest way would probably be-
3" body lift-$150-$200
2wd- 2" coil spacers- $70-$80
4wd- crank torsion bars
With 4-5" lift you can easily fit 35" tires

Thanks for the quick reply. Looking at your last statement, I didn't think about the tires. I recently put 20" tires on. So will four extra inches look crazy or jack with my handing?

considering the fact that you have a pretty nice truck, I would NOT by any means try to do some cheap, dangerous modification to your truck to give it more clearance. Unless this was some beater farm truck, I would spend the extra money and time to DO IT RIGHT and get a decent lift kit. You will be pleased in the end if you do it the right way, plus you will feel better when you are driving it (you won't be constantly thinking about something breaking every time you turn or go over a bump). Just suck it up and do it right! Lift Kit!

Oh yeah, also, do as much research as possible before choosing a lift. In other words, don't lift it so high that you need new brake lines and other parts if you are just going to drive it around on the streets (that would be a waste). Ask around this site what the pros and cons are for various hights, then make a decision from there. You would be suprised at how far you can go on the trails/pits with a 2-3 inch lift. Good luck.
